The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) James W. Reed, M.D. Lectureship is an annual event named in honor of James W. Reed, M.D., MSM’s Chief of Endocrinology & Metabolism and Associate Chair of Research.

The 10th Annual James W. Reed Lecture featured Stephen C. Redd, M.D. (RADM, USPHS) Deputy Director for Public Health Service and Implementation Science (DDPHSIS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Click here to read Dr. Redd's biography.
The lecture titled, “Ending the HIV Epidemic” was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 and can be viewed below.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Define CDC’s four strategies of the U.S. Government’s initiative, Ending the HIV Epidemic.
2. Identify two primary obstacles to PREP implementation.
3. Contrast ending the HIV Epidemic with prior efforts in HIV control.

About Dr. James W. Reed, M.D.
- James W. Reed, M.D. Biography
Dr. Reed joined Morehouse School of Medicine in December 1985 as Chair of the Department of Medicine and where he developed and implemented the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He also served as the Director of Internal Medicine Residency Program and Acting Chair of Family Medicine from 1991-1998. He was Director of the Clinical Research Center from 1998-2000. Currently, he serves as Professor of Medicine, Chief of Endocrinology & Metabolism, Associate Chair of Medicine for Research and Chief of Medical Services at Grady Memorial Hospital for MSM.
Dr. James W. Reed, M.D.
A retired Colonel from the U.S. Army, he holds the medals for Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service. Over his career, he has served as:
- Chief of Medicine at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center at the Army base located in Fort Gordon, GA
- Founder of the Residency program at Eisenhower Army Medical Center
- Fellowship Director for the Endocrine Fellowship at the Madigan Army Medical Center
- Director of the Clinical Research Center in Tacoma, WA
- Founder and past president of the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks, Inc.
Dr. Reed has participated on numerous international and domestic advisory and policy making boards including the National Diabetes Advisory Board, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Disease/ National Institutes of Health, as well as the Joint National Committee, V, VI, VII on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. He is also a charter member of the American Society of Hypertension, a charter member of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist, a member of the Board of Directors for Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control, and a member of the Diabetes Epidemic Action Council of the American Diabetes Association.
In 2004, Dr. Reed was elected a Master in the American College of Physicians. In May 2010, he became an Inaugural Fellow of the American Society of Hypertension. In 2013, Dr. Reed served on the ACP Committee for response to the Joint Committee of Hypertension Guidelines (JNC8). He has received Lifetime achievement awards from the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks, Inc. and the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control, as well as a Senior Sage Award from Grady Healthcare Systems.
Dr. Reed has authored more than 50 articles and book chapters in peer-reviewed publications. He is also the author and co-author of three books: “The Black Man’s Guide to Good Health” now in its recently released third edition, “High Blood Pressure: What Every African American Man and Woman Should Know About Living with High Blood Pressure,” and sole author of “Living With Diabetes: A Guide for Patients and Parents”, in its second edition. He has traveled all around the world lecturing including South America, Australia, Africa, England, and Europe. Dr. Reed also recently presented “Deploying Short and Long acting GLP-1 Analogs in Type 2 Diabetes” at the National Medical Association Conference in Los Angeles and was featured on the front page of the October 2015 edition of Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine.
Dr. Reed recieved a medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and completed residency training at the Madigan Army Medical Center and a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, California.
