Medical Student Education

The Family Medicine and Rural Health Clerkship (FMRH) is a required six-week clerkship, essential to the education of all medical students irrespective of eventual specialty choice. FMRH clerkship introduces the student to concepts, values and skills of Family Medicine that are required to provide excellent and comprehensive health care with an emphasis on underserved and minority populations in both urban and rural settings.

Objectives of the FMRH Clerkship

  1. Demonstrate the unequivocal value of primary care to any health care system by providing personalized preventive and sick care for individuals and families.
  2. Teach an approach to acute presentations commonly seen in the hospital and office setting.
  3. Teach an approach to the management of chronic illnesses that are commonly seen in the office setting.
  4. Teach an evidenced-based approach to a wellness visit for any age or gender patient.
  5. Model the principles of family medicine care: delivery of continuous comprehensive care, including health    maintenance, disease prevention, and the evaluation and management of common acute and chronic medical problems.
  6. Provide instruction in history taking, communication, physical examination, and clinical reasoning skills.
  7. Provide exposure to rural health challenges and resources through a rural clinical experience.

Overview of Teaching Formats

The overall goal of the family medicine clerkship is to provide an outstanding learning experience for all medical students by adapting the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine Nationally Clerkship. The six-week clerkship is as follows;

  • First: Orientation and Interactive Workshop Sessions
  • Second-Fifth: Two weeks block equally spent in a clinical environment for both the urban and rural setting
  • Last: Clinical Evidence Based Article Discussion, Evaluation meetings and Examination 

Overview and Mission of the Rural Health Clerkship

AHEC- Georgia Area Health Education Center responds to the problems of health professionals’ supply and distribution in rural and underserved areas of the state as a complex, multi-disciplinary center through educational support, student placement, and community organization, distribution of Health Care Professionals and Accessible Healthcare for the underserved.
